Van insurance group
Quick answer
Vans and light commercial vehicles are rated on a related but separate goods-vehicle scale rather than the standard car 1–50 groups. We don't yet carry a dedicated van dataset — we'd rather say that plainly than publish numbers we can't stand behind. For car-derived vans and pickups, the coverage below is what we do have.
Typical group range here
Groups 29–41
Typical annual estimate*
£660–£1350
*Estimate only, not a quote — driver aged 30–49, medium-risk postcode, comprehensive cover. The midpoint (35) sits in the high band. How we calculate this.

*Estimate only, not a quote — based on the lowest trim in each model's range.
Why van ratings work differently
Commercial vehicles are rated on their own scale because the risk profile is different: payload, usage pattern, overnight parking and tool contents all matter in ways they don't for a private car. A van's rating also interacts with how it's insured — carriage of own goods, haulage or courier use are priced very differently from private use on the same vehicle.
What we can tell you today
Our reg-based checker will resolve car-derived vans and pickups that exist in our dataset, and the models listed below are rated on the standard car scale. For a full LCV lookup, your insurer or broker has access to the commercial rating data directly — we'd rather point you there than invent a number.
How these ratings are set
Every figure here comes from the same ABI/Thatcham 1–50 scale used across the site — there is no separate scale for a body style or a brand. See how insurance groups are decided for the rating factors behind each number, or car insurance groups explained for the wider picture. For model ranges launched since August 2024, check our Vehicle Risk Rating guide — those cars are increasingly rated on a different framework.
Frequently asked questions
Do vans have insurance groups 1–50 like cars?
No. Light commercial vehicles use a separate goods-vehicle rating scale. Car-derived vans and pickups can appear on the car scale, which is why some are listed on this page.
