Volkswagen insurance groups
Quick answer
Volkswagen's range covers an unusually wide span. The up! and Polo anchor the cheap end in the low groups, the Golf and T-Roc sit mid-scale, and the GTI and R versions of the Golf reach the thirties — a near-30-group spread within a single model name.

How much does it cost to insure a Volkswagen?
There is no single Volkswagen insurance cost, because the range covers groups 1 to 37. So what is the average cost to insure a Volkswagen? Across the models we cover it works out at roughly £455 a year for a driver aged 30–49 on comprehensive cover, with the cheapest entry trims near £220 and the highest-rated derivatives near £995. That average Volkswagen car insurance cost is a midpoint rather than a prediction: it tells you where the brand sits against others, not what you will pay.
So is Volkswagen expensive to insure? Not especially. Volkswagen sits in the affordable half of the market. How much does a Volkswagen cost to insure in practice? That depends almost entirely on which one: the Volkswagen Up is the cheapest model here, starting at group 1, while the Volkswagen Golf reaches group 37 at the top of its range. That gap matters far more than the badge, which is why a model-by-model comparison beats any brand-level average.
Treat these as comparison figures rather than a Volkswagen car insurance price you can hold us to. The average cost of Volkswagen car insurance in your own case will also depend on your age, postcode, mileage, claims history and excess, and for an actual Volkswagen car insurance quote you will need to price the exact derivative. The fastest way to know which derivative you are looking at is to check the registration.
Compare it against the rest of the market in the insurance group prices table, or see how the group affects your premium across age bands. For everything outside the car, read what affects car insurance price.
The Golf is the clearest trim-spread example on the site
Few cars illustrate the trim effect better. A 1.0 TSI Golf and a Golf R share a name, a silhouette and a showroom, but they're rated very differently because performance and repair cost differ enormously. Searching "Golf insurance group" without specifying the engine will always give you a misleadingly wide answer — the derivative is the thing that matters.
VW's electric and premium end
The ID.3 sits above the equivalent petrol Golf trims, which is typical for EVs and comes down to battery and structural repair cost rather than performance. The Tiguan's position reflects its size and equipment rather than speed. Neither is at the top of the scale — VW's genuinely high groups are reserved for the R-badged performance cars.

How these ratings are set
Every figure here comes from the same ABI/Thatcham 1–50 scale used across the site — there is no separate scale for a body style or a brand. See how insurance groups are decided for the rating factors behind each number, or car insurance groups explained for the wider picture. For model ranges launched since August 2024, check our Vehicle Risk Rating guide — those cars are increasingly rated on a different framework.
Frequently asked questions
What insurance group is a VW Golf?
The Golf spans roughly groups 10 to 37 depending on engine and trim — a 1.0 TSI Life sits near the bottom of that range, a Golf R near the top. Check the specific derivative rather than the model name.
