Land Rover insurance groups
Quick answer
Land Rover occupies the top end of the insurance scale. The Evoque and Discovery Sport start in the mid-to-high twenties, and the Defender and Range Rover run well into the forties and beyond — a range where nothing is cheap to insure.

How much does it cost to insure a Land Rover?
There is no single Land Rover insurance cost, because the range covers groups 25 to 50. So what is the average cost to insure a Land Rover? Across the models we cover it works out at roughly £885 a year for a driver aged 30–49 on comprehensive cover, with the cheapest entry trims near £735 and the highest-rated derivatives near £1,275. That average Land Rover car insurance cost is a midpoint rather than a prediction: it tells you where the brand sits against others, not what you will pay.
So is Land Rover expensive to insure? Yes, relative to mainstream brands — Land Rover models cluster in the upper half of the scale. How much does a Land Rover cost to insure in practice? That depends almost entirely on which one: the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is the cheapest model here, starting at group 25, while the Land Rover Defender reaches group 50 at the top of its range. That gap matters far more than the badge, which is why a model-by-model comparison beats any brand-level average.
Treat these as comparison figures rather than a Land Rover car insurance price you can hold us to. The average cost of Land Rover car insurance in your own case will also depend on your age, postcode, mileage, claims history and excess, and for an actual Land Rover car insurance quote you will need to price the exact derivative. The fastest way to know which derivative you are looking at is to check the registration.

Theft risk is a real factor here, not a rumour
Security is one of the scored pillars, and high-value SUVs have been a well-documented target for keyless relay theft in the UK. That shows up in the ratings, and it shows up again in insurer appetite — some models have been genuinely harder to insure in certain postcodes, independent of where they sit on the 1–50 scale.
Repair cost does the rest
Aluminium structures, air suspension, large alloys and extensive driver-assistance hardware all make these expensive cars to put right after even modest damage. Combine that with high replacement values and the result is a range that starts where most brands finish.
Range Rover and Discovery insurance, specifically
Most people arriving here are not shopping the badge, they are shopping one nameplate. Cheap Range Rover insurance is a relative term: the Evoque is the cheapest Range Rover to insure in our data, starting in the mid-twenties, while the full-size Range Rover sits at the very top of the 1–50 scale. If you want the cheapest Range Rover insurance available, the Evoque in an entry diesel trim is where the range actually starts — the saving against a full-size car is measured in thousands, not hundreds.
Insurance for Discovery models splits the same way. The Discovery Sport is the accessible one, rated in the high twenties to high thirties depending on engine and trim, while the full Discovery is a larger, heavier and more expensive vehicle to repair. Both are rated as entirely separate derivatives, so the shared name tells you very little about the premium.
One practical point that applies across the range: approved security helps here more than on most brands. Keyless relay theft is a documented problem on high-value SUVs, insurers know it, and a Thatcham-approved tracker or an immobiliser is sometimes a condition of cover rather than a discount. It will not change the published group — nothing fitted after the fact does — but it can change whether an insurer will quote you at all.
How these ratings are set
Every figure here comes from the same ABI/Thatcham 1–50 scale used across the site — there is no separate scale for a body style or a brand. See how insurance groups are decided for the rating factors behind each number, or car insurance groups explained for the wider picture. For model ranges launched since August 2024, check our Vehicle Risk Rating guide — those cars are increasingly rated on a different framework.
