MG insurance groups

By Insurance Group Checker Editorial TeamReviewed by Motoring Data DeskLast updated

Quick answer

MG is the value play in the UK market, and the ratings mostly follow the pricing. The MG3 and entry ZS sit in single figures to the low teens, the HS occupies the mid-teens to low twenties, and the electric MG4 sits noticeably higher than the petrol cars for reasons that have nothing to do with how it drives.

How much does it cost to insure a MG?

There is no single MG insurance cost, because the range covers groups 4 to 32. So what is the average cost to insure a MG? Across the models we cover it works out at roughly £480 a year for a driver aged 30–49 on comprehensive cover, with the cheapest entry trims near £285 and the highest-rated derivatives near £885. That average MG car insurance cost is a midpoint rather than a prediction: it tells you where the brand sits against others, not what you will pay.

So is MG expensive to insure? Not especially. MG sits in the affordable half of the market. How much does a MG cost to insure in practice? That depends almost entirely on which one: the MG 3 is the cheapest model here, starting at group 4, while the MG MG4 EV reaches group 32 at the top of its range. That gap matters far more than the badge, which is why a model-by-model comparison beats any brand-level average.

Treat these as comparison figures rather than a MG car insurance price you can hold us to. The average cost of MG car insurance in your own case will also depend on your age, postcode, mileage, claims history and excess, and for an actual MG car insurance quote you will need to price the exact derivative. The fastest way to know which derivative you are looking at is to check the registration.

Why MG rates lower than its size suggests

MG's cars are priced to undercut rivals, and a lower list price feeds straight into the rating — new car value is one of the scored factors, and it sets the insurer's worst-case exposure on a total loss. Add modest performance across most of the range and parts that are inexpensive by design, and you get ratings that sit below equivalent-sized cars from established brands.

The MG4 EV is the exception to watch

The electric MG4 is rated well above the petrol models despite being an ordinary family hatchback to drive. That is battery and repair economics rather than risk in any everyday sense: a damaged pack is expensive, specialist repair networks are narrower, and insurers price that caution in. Anyone cross-shopping an MG4 against a petrol ZS should price both rather than assume the newer car is comparable.

The warranty is not an insurance factor

MG's long warranty is a genuine ownership advantage, but it does not touch the insurance group. The panel rates repair cost and complexity, not who pays for a mechanical failure — so a long warranty lowers your running costs without lowering your premium.

How these ratings are set

Every figure here comes from the same ABI/Thatcham 1–50 scale used across the site — there is no separate scale for a body style or a brand. See how insurance groups are decided for the rating factors behind each number, or car insurance groups explained for the wider picture. For model ranges launched since August 2024, check our Vehicle Risk Rating guide — those cars are increasingly rated on a different framework.

Frequently asked questions

Which MG is cheapest to insure?

The MG3 sits lowest in our data, starting in the low single-figure groups, with entry ZS trims close behind. The table on this page ranks every MG we cover by its typical group range.

Is MG cheap to insure?

Generally yes, for the petrol models — low list prices and modest performance keep the ratings down relative to similarly-sized cars from established brands. The electric MG4 is the exception and rates considerably higher.

Why is the MG4 EV in a higher group than the MG ZS?

Repairability rather than performance. Battery packs are expensive to replace, EV repair networks are narrower, and a moderate impact can write off a car that would be economically repairable with a petrol drivetrain. None of that reflects how safe or fast the car is.
