Skoda insurance groups
Quick answer
Skoda is one of the best-value brands on the insurance scale. The Fabia starts in the low single figures, the Octavia and Kamiq sit in the low-to-mid teens, and only the vRS performance models climb past the mid-twenties — all on Volkswagen-group engineering.

How much does it cost to insure a Skoda?
There is no single Skoda insurance cost, because the range covers groups 2 to 29. So what is the average cost to insure a Skoda? Across the models we cover it works out at roughly £415 a year for a driver aged 30–49 on comprehensive cover, with the cheapest entry trims near £240 and the highest-rated derivatives near £820. That average Skoda car insurance cost is a midpoint rather than a prediction: it tells you where the brand sits against others, not what you will pay.
So is Skoda expensive to insure? No — Skoda is one of the cheaper mainstream brands to cover. How much does a Skoda cost to insure in practice? That depends almost entirely on which one: the Skoda Fabia is the cheapest model here, starting at group 2, while the Skoda Octavia reaches group 29 at the top of its range. That gap matters far more than the badge, which is why a model-by-model comparison beats any brand-level average.
Treat these as comparison figures rather than a Skoda car insurance price you can hold us to. The average cost of Skoda car insurance in your own case will also depend on your age, postcode, mileage, claims history and excess, and for an actual Skoda car insurance quote you will need to price the exact derivative. The fastest way to know which derivative you are looking at is to check the registration.

VW mechanicals without the VW rating
Skoda's models share platforms and engines with Volkswagen, Seat and Audi equivalents, but frequently rate a little lower in comparable trim. Part of that is new-car value, which the panel scores directly, and part is specification — Skoda tends to sell more cars in modest trims with smaller wheels and fewer sensors to recalibrate after a knock.
The vRS step and the Octavia's spread
The Octavia is the range's clearest illustration of trim mattering: a 1.0 TSI SE sits in the low teens, the vRS in the high twenties. If you want space on a budget, the base Octavia is one of the strongest group-to-practicality trades available — a genuinely large car rated like a small one.
How these ratings are set
Every figure here comes from the same ABI/Thatcham 1–50 scale used across the site — there is no separate scale for a body style or a brand. See how insurance groups are decided for the rating factors behind each number, or car insurance groups explained for the wider picture. For model ranges launched since August 2024, check our Vehicle Risk Rating guide — those cars are increasingly rated on a different framework.
